Maikannan’s parents may be separated, but he is safe from illnesses

Three year old Maikannan is teh only child of Ganesh and Subathra Devi. His parents separated over a family fight when Maikannan was a baby. His mother work as sweeper to support the family, they live in Uyyalikuppam along with his maternal grand parents.

Maikannan is enrolled in lower kindergarten at the Primary School run by HOPE Foundation in Pudupattinam, near Chennai, India. At the time of admission, the school ensured that Maikannan was taken to the government run primary health clinic where he was given the DPT (Diptheria, Pertussis, Tetanus) shot, and OPV (Oral Polio Vaccine). Maikannan will continue receiving OPV whenever there is a pulse polio drive. A primary health worker will also be visiting the school periodically, to ensure that Maikannan gets all his other vaccinations on time.
